At 9 o'clock in the morning on May 4th, Chen Zengtao, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada, was invited to our faculty to make a report on the topic of " Advanced Manufacturing - From Material to Product", in the conference room 210.
Prof. Chen firstly started with the processing and manufacturing processes of metal products such as casting, stamping and additive manufacturing. He introduced the advantages and disadvantages of various methods and key technical problems. Subsequently, he emphasized the importance of material constitutive models and corresponding numerical simulation techniques. And the application of mechanics theory and models in auto parts processing and Canadian petroleum industry was introduced. Prof. Chen gave a brief review of his long-term work in manufacturing process research and explained his views on the latest scientific issues in this field.
Prof. Chen’s lecture was clear, concise, and easy to explain in a profound way. The content of the lecture attracted the strong interest of teachers and students. The teachers and students presented made a wide range of exchanges and discussions with Professor Chen on the academic issues in their own research. Professor Chen’s personal charm of rigorous, professional and cordial left a deep impression on the teachers and students.

Prof. Chen Zengtao published 121 papers in Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, International Journal of Solids and Structures, Proceedings of the Royal Society A, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Applied Mechanics, and Science Bulletin. Among them, there are 99 SCI papers and 115 EI papers. His article was cited more than 600 times by SCI. The book, Micromechanics of Ductile Fractures, was published by Springer Press as one of the famous series of solid mechanics books. Prof. Chen won the Canadian Innovation Foundation Leader Award, the Best Light Paper Award of the Canadian Light Metal Branch of the Canadian Metallurgical and Mining Association (an entire Canadian one per year), New Brunswick University Outstanding Research Award, Harrison-McKeen Foundation Youth Scholarship Awards, Humboldt Researcher Awards, and other important awards.
